Raku Workshops pay for each separately or take advantage of our reduced rate for all 3 for $100!

Raku is derived from an ancient Japanese method of firing. The pots are removed from the kiln when hot and placed into a container of peat moss, leaves, grasses or newspaper. The unique pattern of colours and metallic finish comes from the interplay of flames, smoke and rapid cooling. Due to the low-fire method, Raku is strictly decorative and no two pieces are ever alike. This is a three part workshop, each can be taken separately and is structured so that potters can take this class and bring their own bisque ware or their own pre-glazed ceramics to the firing.

1. Handbuilding in Clay with Shawn Berard, Saturday, March 14, 12-4 pm, $50. 2. Glazing Raku, Sunday, April 5, 1-3 pm, $25 3. Firing Raku, Saturday, April 25, 10 am - finished *late afternoon, dependant on number of students and pots, $50

Raku workshop is taught by resident artist: Shawn Berard. All materials are supplied except you need to bring your own bisqued pots. Please bring at least one finished glazed pot to begin firing, additional pots may be glazed inbetween firing process.

Shawn Berard has a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Manitoba. He has instructed ceramic art classes at the East End Leisure Centre, independent workshops, and Blue Sky Youth Alliance program.

Mixed Media: Abstracting Collage with Jordan Miller; Sunday, March 22, 1-4 pm (collage) & Sunday, March 29, 1-4 pm (abstracting the collage): $75 (includes mediums and paint, conte, pastel, markers, instructor, 6 hours of instruction/work time) participants bring scissors, paint brushes, national geographic magazines you are willing to cut, some will be provided.

This workshop will focus on the placement of contrasting & complimentary visual and physical textures through the abstraction of lines & shapes. Students will draw over collage, creating new or similar patterns using different mediums to unify or diversify the spaces. This is not a cutting and pasting of people collage, its purely about abstracting artwork. We will also cover acid/archival materials and what to and not to use. How to use: texture medium, modeling paste, crackle medium, etc. with acrylic paints, will be covered in this workshop...

Specialized--Rag Paper Making! Instructed by Artist Andrew Marek, Saturday & Sunday May, 12:30-4:30, $80 (Students will bring in a 18" x 24" minimum tub for pulp, students may also bring in paper additives with the request to not bring in glitter!)

The workshop and material fee includes the use of a mold and decal, stock pulp (that can be modified) to make approximately 12 sheets of 8.5 x 11paper & enough information to get the paper enthusiast into making beautiful unique and archival papers.

He has been producing papers using a Hollander beater. The bulk of the pulp is made of recycled cotton rags, but other natural fibers can be introduced to produce varying papers with unique characteristics. For those with a special project in mind or those who are just interested in creating archival papers this workshop will give you a good overview of what's required to make archival papers from natural fibers and easily attained household items.

Andrew is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art (A.O.C.A.) in Toronto. He also has a professional photography certificate from Langara College in Vancouver. He is a practicing artist living in Winnipeg always looking to expand the boundaries of his work. He was introduced to papermaking early on in his artist career and has discovered that paper bridges the many needs he had for his varying artistic endeavors.

Maximum 10 participants.
